Etudes sans Frontières (ESF), created on March 29th, 2003, is a non-political and non-profit organization run by volunteers. ESF aims at helping students across the world whose studies have been interrupted because of war, political crisis, or oppression.
Helping the students of a war-torn country is crucial for the democratic future of that country. ESF intends to contribute to the realization of this ambitious task.
Our mission consists, depending on the situation, of supporting the students in their native country or in allowing them to come to Europe to study. Our final objective is to enable selected students to develop various civic and professional projects in their country of origin.
Our goal is also to provide information on the countries in which we work to the Western public. This implies leading public awareness campaigns and developing partnerships with various institutions and civic society partners.
Our goals:
1. To allow the youth from countries in crisis to carry on with, or to resume their studies, in order to support and train individuals likely to help to rebuild their country on a democratic basis.
2. To involve European students in actions of international solidarity.
Where and how are we working ?
Etudes sans Frontières is likely to take work in countries demonstrating one or several of the following criteria :
. going to university is dangerous for students and teachers : checkpoints, threats, kidnappings, arrests, mines, bombings...
. the local infrastructure has been destroyed : university buildings, libraries and laboratories destroyed ; textbooks, archives and school equipment missing.
. studies are frequently interrupted : closing of universities, lack of professors, lack of diversity in the curriculum, censorship...
. the crisis makes it impossible for the youth or a specific group among this youth to have access to the existing local infrastructure or to receive normal schooling.
Depending on the situation and the local needs, Etudes sans Frontières decides whether to welcome students in Europe or whether to organize missions of training and support to the local teachers and students. In both cases, the organization favors training likely to have a lasting impact on the process of reconstruction and on the region's development.
Today we have two principal missions : the Chechen mission and the Rwandan mission.
